After School at Devon House
From Yard Notes, Volume 1: Come Outside With Me
Devon House was an iconic part of my childhood in Kingston. If you grew up there, you either went to Devon House or wanted to go. The grounds were beautiful, but the famous ice cream was the real treat.
During one visit, I was sitting on a bench eating ice cream with my children when I noticed a group of children in school uniforms running around. Watching them took me straight back to being their age.
I did not usually get to visit Devon House after school. We would go to my father’s office and then head home, so Devon House was saved for weekends. Seeing these children there on an ordinary school day felt special.
One little girl carried a stuffed animal while she ran. Her hair was in a bun, loose coils fanning out at the top, and her skirt was swinging. She was not thinking about any of that. She was just running.
Ice cream, open space, and the freedom to run. The best day of your life. And on a school day, too.
