Here, You Are Safe

From Yard Notes, Volume 1: Come Outside With Me

The child had been crying. I never knew exactly why. What stayed with me was not the reason for the tears, but the way their granduncle responded. He simply gathered the child close.

The child’s fist is pressed against their granduncle’s jaw. No one is rushing them, questioning them, or telling them to stop crying. He does not pull away. He lets the child hold on for as long as they need.

Growing up in Jamaica, I learned that affection was not always expressed through words or physical tenderness. People would cook for you, provide for you, help you, or quietly make sure you had what you needed. Love was present, but it often spoke through acts of care.

An open embrace between an older man and a child was not something I saw often. This moment stood out because it was warm, unguarded, and without hesitation.

Across generations, the embrace became its own language: you are protected, you are allowed to need comfort, and here, you are safe.
