From Yard Notes, Volume 1: Come Outside With Me

In rural Pennington, St. Catherine, there was a man who always seemed to be near the entrance to the hill path leading up to my father’s house. He was quiet and observant, watching the day’s comings and goings. He was not officially the neighborhood watch, but he probably knew everyone who passed through.

On this particular day, he was leaning with his shirt open, one arm resting easy, mouth slightly open like he was mid-thought or had just finished saying something to someone out of frame. There was something effortlessly cool about the way he carried himself. He was not posing or trying to create a moment. He was simply posted up.

I asked if I could take his photograph, and he said yes. I thanked him with a fist bump and kept walking up the hill. It was an ordinary encounter, but that is what made it worth remembering.

Every neighborhood seems to have someone like him: a familiar face, a quiet observer, part of the character of the place.
