So They Would Know
From Yard Notes, Volume 1: Come Outside With Me
From Yard Notes, Volume 1: Come Outside With Me
I brought my children from the United States to Jamaica often because it was important to me that they understood where they came from. I wanted them to know their family, experience Jamaican culture, and feel that their roots belonged to them too.
G was blessed to have a relationship with Papa, their great-grandfather. I kept that relationship as close as I could for as long as Papa was with us.
Papa used his hands constantly. They were working hands, always fixing, carrying, building, or doing whatever needed to be done. There often seemed to be a scrape, cut, or small bandage somewhere. In this painting, the bandage on his finger is a small detail, but it is part of how I remember him.
Papa is looking directly at the camera. G is in profile, standing quietly beneath their great-grandfather’s arm. Papa’s familiar hand rests on G’s shoulder.
What stayed with me was the pride in Papa’s face. He was happy that I had not forgotten where I came from and that I was making sure my children knew him.
I made sure they knew him so they would know where they came from, and in some way, understand themselves.
