Still Here
From Yard Notes, Volume 1: Come Outside With Me
He looked tired. More than tired, really. There was something in his posture that felt almost defeated, but not completely. In Jamaica, many of us are raised to keep going, even when the weight of life begins to show.
I painted this from a photograph I took on a visit home. What stayed with me was the tension between exhaustion and endurance. His head is bowed, his elbows rest on his knees, and for a moment, he allows himself to be still.
The textured teal and red background was not part of the original scene. I added those colors as I painted, to give the quiet moment energy and contrast. The pattern is built up by hand in molding paste, so the wall behind him has a surface you can almost touch.
He may be tired. He may be carrying more than we can see. But he is not gone.
He is still here.
