Papa, my grandfather, had a place on the veranda and a ritual that went with it. Sunday mornings, the Gleaner. Glasses on. Paper held wide. Everything else could wait.
I photographed him because I wanted to hold on to that version of him. The ordinary one. The one the whole family knows. He was not posing or marking an occasion. He was doing what he always did.
I noticed the watch when I was painting him. He wore it even on Sundays, with nowhere in particular to be. That detail felt true to him. A man who keeps time, even when time is not pressing.
At the time, it may not have seemed like a moment worth keeping. It was just Papa, the newspaper, and the veranda. But those are the moments you miss the most.
