That’s Bobsie
From Yard Notes, Volume 1: Come Outside With Me
Uncle Bobsie is one of the oldest of my father’s ten siblings and undoubtedly one of the most stubborn. He loves country life, insists on doing things for himself, and is almost always walking with a stick. It is not always his stick. It is whatever stick he finds along the way.
You do not need to see his face to know it is him. From a distance, the walk gives him away. He has a particular stroll, a familiar rhythm that belongs completely to him.
I took this photograph as he walked up the hill toward my father’s house, passing my father’s car along the way. I painted the plate number on that car. It is there if you look. Details like that are what keep a moment from becoming just a painting.
Seen from behind, the moment holds so much of what I remember about him: his independence, his stubbornness, his connection to the country, and that unmistakable walk.
You know that walk. That’s Bobsie.
